What is a Progressive Republican?
A Progressive Republican
- believes in the defense of the nation, but will not betray Constitutional principles out of fear
believes in justice and the rule of law - acknowledges that there is a difference between freedom and unbridled self-interest
believes that with rights come responsibilities - believes in equality of opportunity, but not in the undue interference of the state in private lives
- believes that all public servants, elected, appointed and hired, are ultimately accountable to the people
- believes that free enterprise is the driving force of America's wealth, strength and vitality, but also that the involvement of the Federal government may be desirable and necessary in certain areas
- believes in traditional family values while acknowledging liberty and justice for all
believes in rule by the majority and also in the rights of minorities - believes that education is a matter for individual states apart from ensuring that individual rights are protected and funding fairly administered
- recognises the difference between a handout and supporting the less able and helping them to prosper.

Here are many things that comprise what many are calling "Progressive Republicans." I'm sure there are more, but these are things I found on another blog and are things I believe I can agree with.

I wonder what part of the U.S. that would be where Democrats believe in little governmental interference? The bottom of Lake Erie?
It certainly isn't the current administration you guys continue to comsume kool aid for.
What you've described is a progressive Democrat. If Progressive R's and progressive D's are so similar, maybe we need a 3rd party that dismisses both radical tree huggers and reactionary ditto heads in favor of rational centrism.
Hi James, I found your blog by way of Swash Zone even though I am not liberal at all. Actually I really have no idea where I seem to fit in anymore. I am a Christian and conservative, yet I have a very realistic approach and am not always a favorite to radical conservatives. I'm not sure I would fit the role of progressive republican either. That's the story of my life.....have my own ideas and don't seem to fit in with any particular party.
I am really enjoying reading your blog, and even the last one with the 58 comments. Interesting to say the least.
Republicans definitely need to get in touch with different people in different generations without pissing off those that lean toward Conservatism. I don't envy them, they certainly have their work cut out for them.
I'm adding you to my blogroll and will definitely be back.

We have the biggest loser playing president on the big screen and you guys in the begging position trying to get scraps from him. If you really thought he was a moderate to get back on track here, you guys wouldn't defend him so vehemently. It makes me question how much of a moderate James is, as well.

The Republican party is not a party of moderates. If the new poll numbers on conservative leaning people are any indicator.

I DID vote for Obama, but barely. I really struggled with the decision. I was actually abroad and voted by absentee. I wasn't one of those that just voted because I felt like it; I compared campaign promises and platforms and experience, etc. I actually got into quite a few arguments with people that were voting either way because they were only voting because their families were voting that way with no opinion of their own.
I'm a moderate, or progressive, Republican. Doesn't mean I always have to vote "R."

We'll have to see how he is the next few years, and who is going up against him. I might add (though my lib friends will not like it) I voted for GWB in '04. Even though I wasn't Bush's biggest fan, Kerry was a joke. You can't run only on a "I'm not the incumbant" platform. If the GOP have a strong candidate I'll most likely go that way, but it all depends I think. We'll know more as the blogging progresses.
I was studying abroad in Southern Mexico, finishing my degree in Spanish. It was my last semester. It was definately interesting voting from abroad, especially watching all of the politics from an election year. It was also interesting watching CNN in spanish on election night to watch the results.
So, do you like Latin American Spanish or Castillian? I find Madrid Spanish hilarious. Their rr's are fun to watch and they don't move their upper lips. I spent last year in Germany watching TVE out of Madrid to keep up my Espanol.
Funny cause the other day someone made a proposal for Esperanto to be the international trade language. I don't think most Americans could learn it, let alone Spanish.
haha, I prefer Latin American spanish. Castillian is hilarious, with their lisped c's & z's...I was required to study abroad for my major. I had three choices: Spain, Costa Rica, or Mexico. I learned all my spanish on mission trips to mexico, so I didn't want to go to Spain and be told my Spanish was "wrong" (which happened to a few of my classmates), so I chose Costa Rica. Unfortunately, my professors said the program went downhill and all I would be doing was going to the beach and surfing instead of learning (they were on to me!) so they switched me to Mexico.
